A 920-pound gator caught by hunters in Alabama on Aug. 14 is the largest ever pulled from that lake and is the second heaviest alligator ever to be killed and captured in an Alabama state-regulated hunt.

Hunter Scott Evans from Center Point, Alabama, and friends Jeff and Justin Gregg were startled when they successfully reeled in the 13-foot, 6-inch gator from Lake Eufala during their second attempt at hooking it, AL.com reported. After they measured and weighed the alligator, the hunters predicted the massive beast would yield 250 pounds of meat.

“It won't go to waste,” Evans told AL.com, declaring that he has some new recipes in mind for a Labor Day cookout.

The 920-pound gator ranks second to the 1,011.5-pound creature captured last year in Meek Creek, a tributary of the Alabama River. When that gator was placed on the scale, 115 pounds of deer meat inside the gator’s stomach contributed to its massive weight. The reptile, which was later dubbed the Stokes alligator in honor of the family who captured it, is currently on display at the Mann Wildlife Learning Museum in Montgomery.

Evans, Jeff, and Justin, his son, were thrilled with their record-breaking catch, which Evans told AL.com was a "team effort" that took six men, two of whom were Alabama conservation officers, to secure.

“It is humbling,” Justin told AL.com. “Before we dispatched [the gator], it's running through your mind, ‘should we just take a picture and let it go?’ It looks like you are looking at a dinosaur.”

The 920-pound gator was not a bad catch for Justin during his first time gator hunting with his father. Jeff told AL.com that his son was still on “cloud nine” after his exciting introduction to the sport.

“It was surreal,” Evans said, according to USA Today. “We weren't expecting anything that big.”

The hunters hope to display their gargantuan gator at an outdoor store after having it fully mounted.
