A 7-year-old boy was handcuffed at school in Miami after allegedly attacking a teacher, leaving his parents angry about the way the school officer handled the situation, WSVN-TV reported.

School police said, according to the television station that the incident happened at the Coral Way K-8 Center on Thursday morning when the boy was taken out of the cafeteria for playing with his food.

During the incident, the boy allegedly "attacked the teacher by repeatedly punching her on her back, in the hallway," a report said, according to WSVN-TV. Authorities said that the child allegedly continued to strike at the teacher once restrained with fist and legs, knocking both to the ground, the television station reported.

Police said they were on the grounds when the child began "grabbing (the teacher's) hair and pulling it towards him" before he was restrained again and calmed down, WSVN-TV said. The teacher said she wanted to file charges, per the television station.

"Says he's a danger to society," Rolando Fuentes, the boy's father, said, according to the television station. "I said, 'What? Seven years old? A danger to society?'"

Mary Alvarez, the boy's mother, speaking through a translator, said that she did not believe it was a mental health issue or an issue with aggression, but she and Fuentes agreed with school officials that the boy would be suspended for 10 days, WSVN-TV said.

Álvarez, though, called the handcuffing by the Miami-Dade Schools police officer disproportionate and outrageous, according to the Miami Herald.

"This is police abuse; a whim of the officer, because my son was calm when they came to look for him," Alvarez, an independent television and radio producer, said to el Nuevo Herald, per the Miami Herald. "The principal, the counselor, and two other people tried to prevent that action and the officer took the child anyway."

The Miami Herald said the boy was suspended for 10 days in November because of another school tantrum, but the mother said the same police officer was involved.

"They have created a psychological trauma, and instead of fixing the problem, you are building a problem," Álvarez said, per the Miami Herald.
