Sixty pounds of suspected marijuana was meant as Christmas presents, an elderly couple told Nebraska officials Tuesday when they were pulled over on Interstate 80, the York News-Times reported.

Patrick Jiron, 80, was arrested and booked into the York County Jail on charges of possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver and having no drug tax stamp, the News-Times said. Barbara Jiron, 83, was also cited but not jailed "due to some medical issues," York County Sheriff Lt. Paul Vrbka told the newspaper.

Deputies allegedly saw the Jirons' Toyota Tacoma going over the center line with the driver failing to signal, authorities told the newspaper. Once the vehicle was stopped, deputies could smell what they believed to be raw marijuana, officials told the News-Times.

The odor led to a search that found 60 pounds of marijuana, worth about $336,000, inside boxes, the newspaper reported. Vrbka told the News-Times that the couple acknowledged the marijuana and said they were traveling from California to Vermont where it was to be given away as Christmas gifts.

WOWT-TV reported that the couple was from Clearlake Oaks, California, about 100 miles northwest of Sacramento.

The couple told authorities, according to Vrbka, that they did not know it was illegal to transport marijuana through Nebraska, the newspaper said.

Many of the comments on social media appeared to support the elderly couple.
