Fifty-five people, including several young teens, were found in the back of a tractor-trailer stopped on the north side of San Antonio Tuesday night and the driver was arrested.

It was unclear where they came or where they were headed but CBS News reported that U.S. Border Patrol and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agents were called to assist.

A handful of the occupants were treated at the scene for injuries and five were taken to a hospital for injuries that reportedly occurred when they were climbing out of the 18-wheeler.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said the incident was nothing like the one that last year, in which 10 people died after being crammed into the back of a sweltering tractor-trailer in what authorities described as an immigrant-smuggling attempt gone wrong.

"This is not like last time when we had a bunch of body bags," he said, according to KENS-TV.

"There are agents at the hospitals talking with people. We are compassionate and providing good care. Each person has been medically screened."

Those who were not injured were being held at a detention center.

Jenny Hixon, the director of education and outreach for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services, was on hand to advocate for their right to legal counsel, CBS News noted.

"We help people seek asylum," she said.

"We need to be humanitarian. We need to do something that is consistent with our values. We must show dignity and respect. We don’t know where they are going. There are lots of detention centers around South Texas."

Migrants pay thousands of dollars to enter the U.S. illegally, with some spending up to $9,200 to hire smugglers to help them.

It turns out that the smuggling of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border relies heavily on American labor. A recent analysis found three out of every five convicted smugglers are U.S. citizens.
