5 Seconds of Summer: Band on Fire, Really, as Guitarist Bursts into Flames

5 Seconds of Summer’s performance at Wembley Arena in London over the weekend was on fire, but not the good kind.

Michael Clifford, the popular Australian band’s guitarist, got so caught-up in his performance of “She Looks So Perfect” Saturday that he accidentally bumped into a pyrotechnics display on stage, MTV.com reported. Clifford jumped back with smoke rising from his head while the display continued to shoot flames along the edge of the stage. He then proceeded to run off stage while trying to smother the flames on his head with a towel.

"Michael has hurt himself, so we will not be continuing the show right now . . . Just want to say thank you so much for coming. He is OK. You guys have been the best crowd we could ever ask for tonight,” Ashton Irwin, the band’s drummer, announced to the audience after bringing the show to a halt as a result of the accident, according to MTV.

Clifford is okay, though he endured burns to his head and face. He has remained in good spirits despite his injury and left his fans a promising thumbs-up message of recovery on Instagram:

Hello world. im doing ok :) thanks for worrying!

The guitarist humorously admitted that “at least I look like two face,” making light out of injuries. He also announced his improving prognosis via Twitter the day following the incident.

"Michael is recovering well after being given the all clear by doctors," band spokeswoman Erin Cooney said, according to CNN.

Clifford’s optimism suggests that the band’s tour will continue unhindered by the accident, a good sign for the fans who purchased tickets for their upcoming performances in Las Vegas, California, Illinois, Ohio, and in multiple US cities.

5 Seconds of Summer is an internationally known boyband featuring singer Luke Hemmings, guitarist Clifford, bassist and singer Calum Hood, and drummer Irwin. Made popular by One Direction, the band got its start on YouTube. Since forming in 2011, 5 Seconds of Summer has been featured on the Teen Choice Awards and they are expected to play in Europe, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand this summer.
