A 4-year-old girl's mom was arrested in Georgia in connection with her murder in Michigan, authorities told WWJ-TV Tuesday.

The arrest ended a manhunt for Candice Diaz, 24, and her boyfriend Brad Fields, 28, after authorities ruled the death of Gabby Barrett a homicide, the television station said. Barrett was discovered unresponsive in a Sumpter Township, Michigan, mobile home park on New Year's Day, WWJ-TV reported.

The girl was later declared dead at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Diaz initially told authorities that Barrett ran her own bath water on Dec. 31, causing burns to her skin, but Diaz did not seek medical care for her daughter, the newspaper wrote. Diaz told authorities that the girl then wanted to take another bath the following day but was later found submerged in the water when left unattended, the newspaper said.

The Free Press wrote that Diaz and Fields have been charged with felony murder, second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse and torture. The U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested the couple Tuesday afternoon near Lake Park, Georgia, near the state border with Florida.

The Washtenaw County medical examiner said in court documents that Barrett's death was the "worst child death case" in 27 years of practice, the Free Press reported. The documents sought a termination of parental rights of Diaz with the girl's half-sister, the newspaper noted.

The court petition detailed alleged physical abuse against Barrett, including being burned so badly that her big toe fell off with police finding melted skin in the bathtub drain, the Free Press said.

"Gabrielle had burns all over her body and bruising to her entire body," the document filed in the Lincoln Hall of Justice in Detroit said, the Free Press stated.

The document said that Diaz had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety while Fields had been diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder, social anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and agoraphobia, which is a type of anxiety disorder, and the Free Press wrote.

According to the Free Press, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services had wanted to remove Barrett's 1-year-old half-sister from the home because of "improper supervision and physical abuse resulting in a child death," according to the petition filed on Jan. 3. Barrett had suffered burns on her legs, buttocks, and elbows, documents show, per the newspaper.
