2048 Game the New Go-To, Follows Popularity of Flappy Bird, Candy Crush

The new Web-based digital puzzle game 2048 has been described as the new Flappy Bird and "Candy Crush for math geeks," wrote CNET.com.

CNET.com's Eric Mack says 2048 is loosely similar to the game Threes and is taking up the slack for the departure of Flappy Bird. Mack said that while the game has a mobile site, there are "plenty of unofficial ports for Android and other platforms have begun to pop up."

"While it's tough to understand what's happening at first glance, it only takes a minute to pick up the game and then you're off on the road to procrastination-enabling addiction," he added.

NDTV Gadgets reported that other games like Threes and 1024 have built their support in app stores as well as positive reviews from popular gaming publications.

"All three games are very similar to each other, and feature a 4x4 grid that begins getting populated by numbers," NDTV Gadgets wrote. "Players can combine grid tiles featuring the same number, by swiping in that direction; with the aim of creating the biggest possible number (that number is limited to 1024 and 2048 in the eponymous games).

"Sounds simple? It isn't, especially when you have a global leaderboard to compete with that's filled with people that seem ridiculously smarter than you," NDTV Gadgets continued.

The creator of 2048, 19-year-old Italian programmer Gabriele Cirulli, expressed his appreciation to the game's players recently on Twitter.

Even though 2048 has gone over 100,000 downloads this month, it still trails Flappy Bird, which was pulled in January after the exceptionally popular game and its developer Dong Nguyen were overwhelmed by media scrutiny.
