2017 was the safest year for air travel in the history of commercial airliners, industry research indicates, BBC News reported.

Two separate reports released by The Aviation Safety Network and by Dutch consultancy To70 found there were no fatal passenger jets crashes occurring anywhere in the world, despite there being a record number of flights taking to the air.

According to To70’s Civil Aviation Safety Review for 2017, the only two fatal accidents to occur in 2017 both involved small turbo-prop planes and accounted for 13 deaths.

The agency estimated a rate of one fatal accident for every 16 million flights, a steep drop from last year’s number which saw 71 civil aviation accidents, six that resulted in fatalities.

The To70 report didn’t include planes weighing less than 12,500 pounds, such as the aircraft in the New Year's Eve crash in Costa Rica that killed 12 people, UPI reported.

A report by the Aviation Safety Network said a total of 10 fatal airliner accidents resulted in 44 fatalities, making 2017 “the safest year ever, both by the number of fatal accidents as well as in terms of fatalities.”

“Since 1997 the average number of airliner accidents has shown a steady and persistent decline, for a great deal thanks to the continuing safety-driven efforts by international aviation organizations such as ICAO, IATA, Flight Safety Foundation and the aviation industry,” ASN President Harro Ranter said.

A senior aviation consultant for To70, was cautiously optimistic about the statistics.

“It is unlikely that this historic low will be maintained; in part, these very positive figures rest on good fortune,” he told The Independent. “Nevertheless, the safety level that civil aviation has achieved is remarkable.”

He noted that, despite this, “the risks to civil aviation remain high as shown by the seriousness of some of the non-fatal accidents.”
