“For the first time, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, claimed the No. 1 Honor Roll spot, barely edging out Massachusetts General Hospital. Johns Hopkins Hospital, which in 2012 lost a 21-year first-place reign, was No. 3,” the list says.
“The Mayo Clinic is very pleased to receive this recognition as a top hospital in this national ranking,” said John Noseworthy, president and CEO of the Mayo Clinic, in a video message posted on the medical facility’s website. “We’re very proud of the staff from all of Mayo Clinic who have worked together to provide outstanding care, safe care, cutting-edge care to our patients.”
U.S. News & World Report said it has published the ranking of the nation's best hospitals for the last 25 years to help patients select the best facility for the type of care they need.
The 2014-15 rankings took into consideration the quality of nearly 5,000 U.S. medical facilities and 16 medical specialties, from cancer to urology.
The rankings are based "largely on objective data on hospital performance, such as patient survival rates and resources like nurse staffing,” U.S. News said. “Each hospital's reputation, as determined by a survey of physician specialists, is also a factor.”
The news magazine also ranked the best children’s hospitals as well as the best regional hospitals to let patients chose the best care within their geographic region of the United States. Boston Children’s Hospital achieved this year’s overall top ranking.
