A 2-year-old boy and his babysitter were hit by a train around noon Monday while walking near elevated tracks with the babysitter’s boyfriend and the boy’s 4-year-old sister in Zephyrhills, Florida. The toddler was killed.
The boyfriend heard the train coming, grabbed the 4-year-old and jumped off the bridge into the water, avoiding the train, according to WFLA News. The babysitter, who was holding the 2-year-old, couldn’t get out of the way in time and both were hit by the CSX train.
The 2-year-old, Hunter Fink, died from his injuries. Both he and the babysitter, Heather Henderson, 26, were taken to the hospital, where she is in stable condition, WFLA reported. Police are investigating the incident.
“This is a tragedy. There’s no other way to say it. There is a family that is suffering greatly right now, more than anybody can imagine. If you can pray for them, please do,” Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco said at a news conference, the Tampa Bay Times reported.
The boyfriend, Cody Williams, and Hunter’s 4-year-old sister had only minor injuries from jumping into the water from a bridge, the Times reported.
The train was traveling from Tampa to Georgia. There was a bend in the track near where the accident occurred, so that the train conductor couldn’t stop the train fast enough when he saw Henderson and Fink close to the tracks.
The children’s mom was at work when the accident occurred, the Times reported.
