A three-year drought in California has left the state short of 11 trillion gallons of water, according to satellite data released by NASA.

The volume of water required for California to recover from drought was calculated by a team of scientists led by Jay Famiglietti of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory using data from NASA's Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellites, according to a press release.

The Sacramento and San Joaquin river basins have lost 4 trillion gallons of water each year since 2011, amounting to more water than the state’s residents use each year.

"It takes years to get into a drought of this severity, and it will likely take many more big storms, and years, to crawl out of it," Famiglietti said in the release.

Water conservation efforts in the state slowed in October, according to a recent press release from the California Water Board.

“Recent rains are no reason to let up on our conservation efforts,” State Water Board chair Felicia Marcus said. “It will take many sustained storms to get us out of this horrible drought.
