11/12/13: Couples Head to the Altar to Get Married on Sequential Date

11/12/13: Couples Head to the Altar to Get Married on Sequential Date

Thousands of couples were rushing to the altar on Tuesday, 11/12/13, to take advantage of the iconic date.

“Iconic dates have become a trend in the United States, reaching heights when more than 65,000 couples tied the knot on 07-07-07,” Brian Beitler, executive vice president of David’s Bridal, said in a statement, according to the Los Angeles Times. “And we have learned that couples love dates that have patterns.”

Just ask Joanna Ortiz. She told CBS New York that she had planned to get hitched with her husband at the Brooklyn courthouse at 10 a.m., giving her the distinction of having her “I do’s” on 10-11-12-13.

“I actually didn’t realize how iconic it was, but I love the number scheme,” Ortiz said. “I just thought it was the cutest thing.”

According to a survey done by David’s Bridal, Tuesday will be one of the busiest wedding dates of the year, with marriages up more than 700 percent from the second Tuesday in November of 2012. More than 3,000 couples are expected to marry today.

“I think it’s a couple reasons,” Stacey Rywelski of David’s Bridal told ABC News. “Most often the brides say they’re into numbers, or having significant numbers in their life. Also, it’s a cool date and they like how it looks on their invitations, or people wanted to have an easy date for the husband to remember the anniversary.”

Rasheeda Tillman of Philadelphia told ABC she was getting married today because she’s “weird with numbers” and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to wed on the second to last sequential date this century.

The special day comes with a price, though. Kat Keane, a wedding planner in Los Angeles, told the L.A. Times that some venues will capitalize on the sequential dates, “so they’ll double or triple their rates. They know there’s going to be a couple who will want it and pay for it.”

For those who weren’t quite ready to wed this year, worry not. The next iconic date, 12-13-14, is right around the corner. It also marks the last consecutive series of the century. The fact that it falls on a Saturday could mean a record-breaking number of nuptuals.
