100-Foot Bratwurst Grilled Up in Illinois Is Just Practice for 200-Footer

A 100-foot bratwurst was grilled to perfection in Belleville, Illinois, on Tuesday, but it was just a practice run for the 200-footer that's on the menu for the town's 200th anniversary celebration next weekend.

It took about 50 volunteers to organize the outdoor grilling of the 60-pound bratwurst, as well as the constant shoveling of coals by Bel-O Cooling and Heating to keep the 100-foot-long grill humming evenly at 160 degrees, the Belleville News Democrat reported.

The 200-pound bratwurst will be the highlight of the Belleville Bicentennial Oktoberfest Weekend Celebration set to be held Sept. 19-21 in downtown Belleville, according to The Associated Press.

There are more than 50 kinds of bratwurst, but the longest are often measured at six to eight inches, according to GermanFoodGuide.com.

Tuesday's practice run with the 100-footer turned out to be a huge success thanks to a person with a megaphone who shouted out instructions, such as when to turn the brat. A trial turn with a 50-foot bratwurst did not turn out so well in August, a source told the New Democrat, noting that the German sausage broke up into several pieces after it was turned too quickly on a too-hot grill.

Larry Schubert, of Schubert's Packing Co., told the News Democrat that he will make the 200-foot bratwurst to be grilled at 11 a.m. Sept. 21 while the 10th Street Baking Company will whip up the bun to go with it. The Lindenwood University football team will carry the bun and grill the bratwurst, according to the newspaper.

Cheerleaders from Southwestern Illinois College will collect donations for those who want a bite with proceeds going to Belleville area food pantries.

Teresa Hessel, of the Belleville 200 Committee, told the newspaper that the original thought was to set the world record for largest cooked bratwurst, but that idea was a bit too expensive.

"We need to put all the money we have toward the festival," Hessel said. "We decided this was not an expense we wanted to incur. We're just going to do it for the fun of it and have it be an unofficial record."
