Americans by and large find the men and women in television news trustworthy in doing their jobs — some more trustworthy than others.
Drawing on several surveys of TV viewers and editorial opinion, here is Newsmax's list of America's 10 most trusted television news personalities:
1. Robin Roberts was cited as the most trustworthy figure in TV news in a recent survey conducted by Reader's Digest. She worked as a sportscaster for ESPN for many years while also reporting for "Good Morning America" before becoming an anchor on "GMA" in 2005. With her at the helm, the show became the top-rated morning program in September 2012.
2. Bill O'Reilly has hosted "The O'Reilly Factor" on Fox News since 1996, and his program is the highest-rated show on the three major 24-hour cable news channels. A poll by Zogby International named O'Reilly the second most-trusted news personality, after Rush Limbaugh.
3. Diane Sawyer served as a co-anchor with Roberts on "GMA" before leaving in December 2009 to anchor "ABC World News," and she also ranked high in the Reader's Digest survey. Sawyer previously served as co-anchor of "CBS Morning News" and as a correspondent on CBS' "60 Minutes." She left "GMA" in August but remains with ABC News.
4. Brian Williams has been anchor and managing editor of "NBC Nightly News" since December 2004. He previously was a White House correspondent and anchor of "The News with Brian Williams" on MSNBC.
5. Barbara Walters has hosted "Today" and "20/20" and was co-anchor of "ABC Evening News." She retired from "The View" in May 2014.
6. Matt Lauer has been a co-anchor on "Today" since 1997. Before that he served as the morning show's news anchor. He is also currently a contributor on "Dateline NBC."
7. Jon Stewart, a satirist as much as a newsman, won top honors in Time magazine's poll to find "America's Most Trusted Newscaster. He has hosted "The Daily Show" on Comedy Central since 1999. He prevailed in the Time survey with 44 percent of the votes, ahead of Brian Williams with 29 percent.
8. Bob Schieffer has been with CBS News since 1969, with posts including anchor of the network's Saturday edition of "CBS Evening News," chief Washington correspondent, and moderator of "Face the Nation." He also moderated a Barack Obama-Mitt Romney debate during the 2012 presidential campaign.
9. Anderson Cooper has been the primary anchor on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360" since 2003. He previously served as a co-anchor on ABC's "World News Now."
10. Scott Pelley serves as anchor and managing editor of "CBS Evening News" and a correspondent with "60 Minutes." He is a former chief White House correspondent.
