Have Mask Mandates Deprived Us of Natural Immunity?

Several liberal Left media sources have criticized President Trump heavily for not routinely wearing a mask during the coronavirus epidemic.

The intensity of criticism has sharply increased after President Trump became infected with the virus and heightened especially when he removed his mask on the White House balcony.

We can fully understand that some — if not many — believe that masks decrease the negative impacts of COVID-19.

This assumption might be correct. However, it needs to be examined on the basis of facts, and not hysteria.

If the assumption is correct, we probably should have seen more COVID-19 cases and higher related mortality rates in countries that refused to make wearing masks mandatory.

The reality is that the opposite happened.

For example, all Scandinavian countries refused to mandate mask wearing.

They have, so far, the lowest in deaths per million due to COVID-19 compared to the rest of Europe and the U.S.

It's been said that people who wear masks in Sweden get stared at, not the other way around.

In statistical term the deaths per million population in western countries that did not mandate wearing a mask such as Sweden (583), Finland (62), Denmark (116), Norway (51) has a mean value of 203 deaths per million population.

On the other hand, the number of deaths per million population in in western countries that, generally speaking, mandated wearing a mask such as U.S. (663), UK (630), Italy (598), Spain (704), Netherlands (385), Belgium (878), France (500) has a mean value of 622 deaths per million population.

We cannot ignore the presence of possible other contributing factors to this observation, such as vitamin D levels in their population, population density, among many other factors.

Not wearing masks in Scandinavian countries needs to be analyzed as a possible cause for their declining COVID-19 fatality numbers.

This could easily and clearly be explained by the fact that not wearing masks allows more viruses to be airborne. Not wearing face-coverings may spread the virus and increase the number of cases. However, according to the science of immunology, electing to not wear a a mask may also stimulate our immune response: to become activated and fight the virus, thus diminishing hospitalization and death rates.

This is demonstrated by the extremely low hospital admissions in the Scandinavian societies compared to most western countries that mandated wearing masks.

Mandating masks has probably deprived us from gaining natural immunity and thus made the disease more fatal.

A similar observation was also noted by Dr. Marty Makary, a John Hopkins Surgeon, on the Tucker Carlson show (see minutes 35-37). Dr. Makary was surprised that a country like Egypt, where most people do not routinely wear masks, have less disease burden than the U.S.

According to the science of immunology the primary immune response, which develops after the first exposure to the antigen (or in this case the virus), creates memory-immune-cells that produce antibodies much faster when the person is re-exposed to the virus.

The quick recovery of President Trump and the development of antibodies in his blood during the first few days after catching the disease fits with this immunological analysis. It could also be illustrative of the president having developed an appreciable immunity level, and of the presence of "memory cells" that can remain for years in connection with this disease.

Do we attribute these outcomes in the president because he routinely does not wear a mask?

In this particular situation, not routinely wearing masks (rather than routinely wearing them in all venues) could have been a factor contributing to saving President Trump and also granting him a speedy recovery.
