No Press Outlet Has Right to Interview a President

I have asked many times to interview the president, the vice president, and various members of the current administration. I made the same frequent requests during the previous administration and have asked repeatedly for both of Michigan’s U.S. Senators to grant me an interview.

On occasion we get the green light but far more often than not we don’t get the opportunity that we are seeking.

Have my First or Fifth Amendment rights been violated?

No, of course not.

But that is in essence the argument being put forth by CNN as it battles The White House to get Jim Acosta’s press credentials reinstated. CNN is arguing that somehow it violates the First Amendment guarantee to free speech and to a free press. It further argues that Acosta, a White House reporter has been cheated out of his Constitutional right to due process.

The claims are patently absurd on their face. If it weren’t then my Constitutional rights have been getting trashed for years now and I would need to demand The Commander in Chief, no matter who that is must sit down with me for an interview. My demands must be met or my rights are being trampled!

Let's clear some things up shall we?

Before you can even enter the room where the Press Secretary gives daily briefings you have to be cleared by The Secret Service and be a member of The White House Press Association. They demand proof of who you are and what news organization you represent. Are they and The Secret Service violating the First Amendment by not automatically granting me and every other so-called member of the media automatic access to interviews, press conferences, and press briefings? Again the answer is simple and clear, no.

You see, Jim Acosta does not have a Constitutional right to ask this president or any other president questions because if he did then I too could demand access. And by extension of ‘liberal logic’ so could any reporter in the country illegally; but I digress.

Jim Acosta is welcome to exercise his right to say or write anything he wants about the president, his staff, or members of the administration and he does that daily. CNN, the company he works for, can also do the same thing and they do, all the time.

Jim Acosta is not being denied his right to say or write whatever he wants. Acosta is being denied the privilege of speaking to the president and members of his administration because of his outrageous and boorish behavior. He clearly can continue to chide, malign, and target the man in The West Wing and those on his team with malicious comments and it appears he has continued to do so.

By elevating the fight to a court battle however CNN has lowered the conversation deeper into the abyss and the outcome is not likely to result in the networks favor.

You simply cannot compel the president or anyone else to talk with this reporter or that reporter. If you could I would have been on that train long ago demanding members of Congress, the U.S. Senate and The White House comply with my demands for access.

My guess is that the president and his team will now fight to keep Jim Acosta from ever returning to the place where he openly refused to give up the microphone in a harsh back and forth with The Chief Executive. The line was etched in stone as soon as the lawyers stepped in.

This would certainly not have been allowed by a conservative member of the press for the eight years leading up to this administration and it is right to stop it now. There must be a level of respect put forth in these settings, if not for the man in The Oval Office, then at a minimum for the office itself.

It may take a step or two in court to get it right because as we all know we’re susceptible to being railroaded on such matters by activist judges. So do not be surprised if this case gets a ruling in favor of the hostile press at first. When it is all said and done, the president will win this one walking away. Literally, walking away from those in the press corps that are openly hostile to him and his administration.

In the meantime I will be demanding I get all the interviews I want with anyone and everyone in government — otherwise I will hire some fancy schmancy lawyer to make the demands for me. After all it's my Constitutional right, I’m told, and who are they to say no? I hear that porn lawyer is looking for work and he loves the attention.

Psst — don’t hold your breath, it really isn’t a close call.
