Get caught drunk driving and you will be forbidden from going to Canada — ever!

That’s right, our liberal neighbors to the north do not entertain the notion of immigrants legal or not, touring around their nation with a DWI on their record. In fact, getting convicted of any felony or any level of domestic violence will get you kicked out of Canada for the rest of your life. Period.

It seems the Canadians don’t see the humor in the kind of tragedies we Americans could avoid if we simply applied the laws of our progressive friends to the north. In December of 2018 Canada changed the criminality section of the penal code and made it so if you are ever convicted of driving drunk, spousal abuse, any felony, and a host of other things you can never rehabilitate your past mistakes and therefore never enter Canada, at least not legally.

It hasn’t always been this way. Prior to last year you could petition the federal government in Ottawa for clearance to enter the country if you had some blemishes on your record. That usually took about ten years and some cash paid along the way, plus a Canadian immigration lawyer to get the job done but that is no longer the case. Now it’s one strike and you’re out, for good.

When the changes were made, I didn’t see panels on CNN agonizing over the Canadians being bigots and xenophobes. I didn’t read in The Washington Post about high court challenges to the would-be visitors ability to pop in and run around without a care. In fact, I heard nothing at all about the nasty Canadians taking appropriate proactive steps to protect its citizens.

We should take note of the common-sense approach of the Canadian government’s decision to keep dangerous people from coming in to the country. They took a clear-eyed view of the issues facing them when previously convicted individuals try to enter their country — and yes, it is their country. And they have decided to take the sensible position to keep those that might be a danger to their citizens. They have successfully dodged the P.C. bullet that often kills rational decisions of clear thinking people.

In America we could avoid tragic stories like that of Edwin Jackson, a linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts. Jackson was killed along with his driver when Manuel Orrego-Savala, an illegal alien from Guatemala, slammed into their car while he was drunk behind the wheel.

Unfortunately, instead of blocking drunk drivers from coming in or deporting them immediately upon conviction — too many jurisdictions are more interested in blocking ICE from gaining access to these criminals. Drunk drivers are actually included on lists of those eligible for amnesty put forth by the Socialists trying to take over America. Many on the left find drunk driving to be among so-called ‘low level crimes.’

According the Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 10,000 people are killed every year by drunk drivers. And Immigration and Customs Enforcement statistics show more than 100 illegal aliens are caught daily driving drunk. That means people in the country illegally are caught more than 35,000 times a year driving over the limit. What else do we need to know to accept the common-sense approach taken by Canada?

How about we just call it One and Done and get on with it?

I reached out to the Mothers Against Drunk Drivers National office, I figured surely they would be on board with getting these people off the road and out of the country. But it seems MADD is not all that mad about illegal immigrants driving drunk and said they had no comment on the issue. No comment? I guess it’s only really important if natural born citizens are crossing the center line and killing people.

The bottom line is this: Canada is more serious about keeping criminals off its streets and a safe distance from its citizens than we are in America.

So, if you get caught driving over the limit and want to see the original Tim Horton’s coffee shop and get a maple donut or pay homage at the birth place of Gordie Howe — well you will be plumb out of luck. But if you get caught driving drunk in America, just scream about how horrible your childhood was, how you are being targeted because of your race, that holding you accountable would be racist and of course, Donald Trump is bad. That all seems very reasonable by comparison.

Cheers!
