As a radio host in Michigan, I thought I’d seen just about everything.
However, honestly it would be difficult to match the far-left positions advance by Democratic candidate for governor Gretchen Whitmer and her running mate Garlin Gilchrist, II.
On nearly every issue, they are big-ticket progressives right down the line.
One can’t help but ask, will this play in the Great Lakes State?
We’ve already lived through the impact and devastation of an extremely liberal governor. When Jennifer Granholm was governor, Michigan had 15 percent unemployment.
500,000 jobs vanished across the state.
Electing Whitmer and Gilchrist threatens to bring back the lost decade of low employment and high taxes.
Let’s start with Mr. Gilchrist, who was the national campaign director for extreme far left liberal group Moveon.Org. From that post, Gilchrist advocated a $32 trillion dollar scheme to create a Canadian-style healthcare plan in America. Michigan residents are not ignorant about the costs and the downside of Canada’s healthcare system.
Long lines and rationing often cause Canadians to seek treatment in our state and other border states like New York. In essence, this program would double the size of the federal government overnight. Only massive tax increases, like we have never seen before, could pay for this Marxist pipedream.
Not to be outdone by her running mate Whitmer, who has also taken some of the most extreme positions on the far-left. Whitmer, for example, has advocated for the elimination of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Protection Enforcement Agency (ICE), joining socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
Gilchrist has even called for the elimination of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
That begs the question, who will protect America’s border, not only from illegal immigrants, if the Whitmer/Gilchrist ticket gets their way but from gangs, drugs, and other criminals the DHS claim are routinely hiding in the masses crossing illegally into the country?
It was just a few weeks ago that the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan announced the seizure of 25 kilograms of heroin, 50 kilograms of cocaine and 35 kilograms of fentanyl, enough fentanyl to kill approximately15 million people.
Whitmer and Gilchrist’s position on border protection is an outrage and was a point hammered home during a recent debate between Whitmer and her Republican opponent Bill Schuette. Schuette is a strong proponent of law enforcement and noted that Whitmer has called for the elimination of ICE.
Schuette pledged to never allow sanctuary cities in Michigan and accused Whitmer of attempting to turn Michigan into a "sanctuary state" like California. Sanctuary jurisdictions prevent local law enforcement from working with federal agencies pursuing criminal illegal immigrants.
Whitmer, of course, tries to hide her real positions.
She has refused to address the issue of sanctuary cities directly and her willingness to advocate for the elimination of government agencies designed to protect American citizens from crime and drugs like ICE.
There is little debate that the Whitmer and Gilchrist ticket is far to the left of any candidacy we've seen in my lifetime.
Their election threatens Michigan’s financial security and will open up our state to the type of fiscal irresponsibility we have seen in the past. It will also hinder the ability of the men and women in uniform who protect our families every day from doing their jobs.
Whitmer and Gilchrist would put us in a place that is dangerous.
That’s a chance we can't take.
Common sense dictates the only person we can support for Governor of Michigan is State Attorney General Bill Schuette. Common sense dictates fiscal responsibility over far left notions that will surely bankrupt Michigan in pursuit of ideas that have failed every single time — for more than a century.
