Success is hard-earned. But it’s never harder to earn than when one fails to justly weigh their own strengths and weaknesses. What may seem a matter of fact often becomes an overlooked aspect of one’s endeavors in a rush to become successful. For Mohammed Al-Mathani, a businessman from Sakaka, Saudi Arabia, knowing one’s powers and lack thereof can make all the difference between success and failure.
When you are a novice in your field of choice, it’s advisable to find yourself a mentor. Mohammed firmly believes that a mentor, guru, or career guide can help you cut through the thistles and thorns of individual trial and error. A mentor is someone who has been where you are and knows how to navigate the high seas of starting out. One can start without a mentor, but you'll make mistakes that could have been avoided with some guidance.
All theories prostrate at the altar of reality. When tested, ideas often don’t match up to the unknown aspects of reality. It doesn’t matter what the endeavor is, movement in the direction of change, growth, and improvement will never be easy. Mohammed Al-Mathani believes that work “helps us know our strengths and weaknesses. You can only know what you are good at or bad at when you get down to it and prepare to get your hands dirty.”
When you work with yourself, it’s easy to fall under the “I must be right, and this must be it” influence. This attitude can get in your way of learning about yourself and must therefore be nipped in the bud. To avoid this, Mohammed believes that "one must consistently measure oneself against new challenges as they can show us areas where one may still fall short."
Once you have learned to work with yourself, it’s time to work with others. This helps you know the areas that “might still need work along with those areas that come in handy when dealing with attitudes, habits, and perspectives other than your own,” Mohammed Al-Mathani explains.
Identifying your strengths and weaknesses is the work of a lifetime and must continue as long as there’s breath in your body. However, with Mohammed’s suggestions, one can undoubtedly sharpen themselves along the way.
