Teen Editor Sophia Lia Shares Her Challenges Working on Her Mental Health Magazine

Teen Editor Sophia Lia Shares Her Challenges Working on Her Mental Health Magazine

By    |   Tuesday, 05 October 2021 08:00 AM

Sophia Lia is the 16-year-old creator and editor in chief of Sophia Lia Mag, a mental health and wellness magazine. Sophia shares a deep passion for mental health awareness, and that's why she established the digital and print magazine to help normalize mental health. She aspires to shine a light on mental illness and impact millions of lives across the world.

However, Sophia is still facing a challenge with some people accepting the whole idea of a mental health magazine. She terms it as a sensitive topic that many people want to shy away from. Sophia points out the current generation to be greatly more inclined to entertainment and showbiz, particularly in magazines. This is perhaps evident in the massive number of magazines filled with pop culture, celebrity gossip news, and horoscopes.

Getting people to open up about their mental health also proved to be a challenge. Sophia says that her early days working on the magazine were marked with lots of rejection, with people turning her down to open up about their mental health. She found it hard to get people to share their mental health stories, especially with her young age. But she was not ready to give up on her dream. She kept consistent, and it soon began to pay off with more people now eager to be part of the project. Sophia says she has since received incredible support for the publication, and she is sure to make a real difference by saving lives and breaking the stigma.

Incredibly, Sophia reserves open submissions to anyone willing to share their story. This is a smart move by the young editor to expand the scope of her reach to more people. Having diverse stories in the magazine will present the readers with different scenarios on battling mental health. She hopes that the readers will be able to resonate with the stories, thereby normalizing mental health.

Sophia wishes that more people would accept and embrace her cause in bettering mental health upon youth. She believes that the key is accepting that mental health is a journey that millions are undergoing. She wants you to know that you're not alone in battling with your mental health. A glimpse onto her social handles will usher you into a world of vast mental health stories with people sharing the triumphs over their conditions. Sophia is ever busy sharing and spreading awareness of these issues in the hope of normalizing mental health.

With the magazine already gathering popularity, Sophia's goal is to spread and reach at least 10 million readers. At present, the magazine has reached over three million people across the world, impacting and changing their lives. This is a significant achievement for the young editor and creator, who could only previously have dreamt of it. Sophia finds lots of gratitude and fulfilment from the overwhelming feedback, and she is super excited to break new ground.

Sophia's long-term dream is to see the Sophia Lia Mag gain more popularity and have it in every junior high school across North America. She strongly believes in Noam Shpancer's words that, "Mental health is not a destination, but a process. It's about how you drive and not where you are going.”
