Back in May, Conway, Fla., resident June Royer walked into a bedroom she had provided to a struggling couple and their baby daughter to find that the wife, Jennifer Cardona, was lying dead on the floor. During a domestic dispute — not the first, according to Royer, who would describe the events to the Orlando Sentinel — Jennifer’s husband had kicked her in the stomach.
Writhing in pain and unable to keep liquids down, she eventually died as he fell asleep nearby.
Jennifer is one of too many victims of domestic violence who couldn’t find a way out before her partner took her life. More than a million American women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner every year. Thousands of them die.
But one has to wonder: If Kasandra Perkins had died the way Jennifer did, would a national television personality have delivered an absurd and irresponsible diatribe, as Bob Costas saw fit to do during Sunday Night Football this past weekend?
