Dems Focus on Identity Politics While Americans Focus on Economy

This past weekend, I traveled to Dallas, where I keynoted the Log Cabin Republicans' "Grand Ol' Party," an event that brought out Clarke Cooper, the organization's president, as well as the mayor of Dallas, a number of candidates running for local offices, and a host of gay conservatives honoring the work of an organization that many people find to be an inherent contradiction.

The theme of the event was "Onward and Upward." We talked about the importance of restoring conservatism to power, both by replacing far-left Democratic candidates and kicking out Republican ones who've forgotten their purpose. We talked about fiscal conservatism, limiting government spending, lowering taxes and putting an end to government corruption. And we talked about looking to the principles of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan for new inspiration.

But oddly, the one thing no one spent much time talking about was gay rights. It was a refreshing omission — and an intentional one. I left thinking, boy, is there a lesson here for the left and the Obama administration.
