The Austrian satirist and newspaper editor Karl Kraus once penned a pithy phrase about the very institution he helped to shape: "Journalists write because they have nothing to say, and have something to say because they write."
Kraus can rest soundly in his Vienna grave knowing not much has changed since then.
Little brings this into sharper focus than the modern, protracted presidential campaign, where the media strain to fill an entire year with newsworthy observations. The Republican 2012 field has barely begun to take shape, yet the lack of anything real to say hasn't stopped reporters and commentators from writing it all down anyway.
