A total of 54 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home this Thanksgiving weekend. That’s the highest total since 2005 and represents a 5 percent increase from last year.

Nearly nine out of 10 travelers — 48.5 million — will be driving. They’ll be paying an average of $2.79 a gallon for gas. That’s up 31 cents from a year ago and the highest level in four years.

Paying for gas is only part of the challenge when hitting the road. Dead batteries, lockouts, and flat tires will cause 360,000 motorists to call AAA for assistance.

And, of course, there are traffic jams. “Drivers in San Francisco, New York City and Boston will see the largest delays – nearly quadruple normal drive times.” To avoid congestion, the best travel days are Thanksgiving Day, Friday, or Saturday.

The top 10 destinations for this year are expected to be:

  1. Orlando, Florida
  2. New York, New York
  3. Anaheim, California
  4. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  5. Las Vegas, Nevada
  6. Cancun, Mexico
  7. Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas
  8. Honolulu, Hawaii
  9. Washington, D.C.
  10. Miami, Florida
