July 7, 2022: Twenty-six percent (26%) of voters believe the federal government is seriously trying to secure the southern border. A Scott Rasmussen national survey found that 52% do not think they are making a serious effort, and 22% are not sure.
The survey also found that two-thirds (66%) believe that if the federal government fails to defend the border, individual states should have the right to do so. Just 20% say states should not have that right, and 14% are not sure. Half of Americans (50%) say their own governor should formally declare an invasion of illegal immigrants in their state, thereby increasing the governor’s authority to detain and deport illegal immigrants. Fifty-four percent (54%) say that the governors of border states should do so.
Methodology
The survey of 1,200 registered voters was conducted online by Scott Rasmussen on June 23-25, 2022. Fieldwork for the survey was conducted by RMG Research, Inc. Certain quotas were applied, and the sample was lightly weighted by geography, gender, age, race, education, internet usage, and political party to reasonably reflect the nation’s population of registered voters. Other variables were reviewed to ensure that the final sample is representative of that population.
The margin of sampling error for the full sample is +/- 2.8 percentage points.
