At $4.35 per pack, Connecticut and New York have the highest taxes on cigarettes in the nation. Rhode Island is the only other state to top the $4 mark at $4.25.

At the other extreme, five states have cigarette taxes at less than 50 cents a pack — North Carolina (0.45), North Dakota (0.44), Georgia (0.37), Virginia (0.30), and Missouri (0.17).

In addition to state taxes, cigarettes are also subject to a federal excise tax of approximately $1.00 per pack.
