August 10, 2018: Out of the 435 races for the House of Representatives this year, only four lack a Democratic candidate. That’s down dramatically from 36 races with no Democrat on the ballot in 2014.

On the other side of the aisle, there are 38 races without a Republican candidate on the ballot.

That’s little changed from 40 in 2014. Click here for the full list of districts without a Democratic or Republican candidate in 2018. This may be one more reflection of the increased enthusiasm among Democrats during the 2018 election cycle.

A recent Number of the Day found that there are now 34 Republican seats in Congress at high risk in November. That’s up from 28 earlier in the year. Democratic prospects have also improved in races for the Senate and governorships.

There have been 124 districts in 28 states with no major party opposition in at least one general election between 2014 to 2018. Eleven districts have had no major party opposition in all three election cycles.

Fourteen districts that had no major party opposition in 2014 and 2016 have two major party candidates in the 2018 general election. Click here for a list of U.S. House races without major party opposition organized by year and district.
