Growing old may be better than the alternative, but it’s becoming very expensive. The median cost of a private room in a nursing home is now $100,375.

That works out to $275 a day.

According to the Genworth Cost of Care Survey, a semi-private room costs nearly as much — $89,297.

There are, of course, a wide variety of alternatives available for the no-longer-young.

At the most basic level, homemaker services provide "hands-off care such as cooking, cleaning and running errands." The median national cost for these services is $21 an hour.

Adult day healthcare services provide social and support services in a community setting.

The median cost is $72 a day. These services can provide a break for caregivers at an annual cost of $18,720.

Assisted living facilities provide care in a residential setting. This allows more independence for the resident and carries a median cost of $48,000 a year.

It’s important to remember, of course, that these are median prices with significant regional differences. For example, in Washington, D.C., the cost of an assisted living facility is more than twice the national median at $111,195. That’s the highest rate in the nation.

Genworth provides an interactive feature that allows you to check the various costs in your state or region.
