Twitter Now Hotbed for Jihadist Content

Twitter has become ground zero for Jihadist propaganda, a new report to be released Tuesday from West Point's Combating Terrorism Center suggests.

"Twitter has become the main hub for the active dissemination of links guiding users to digital content," the report, "Tweeting for the Caliphate," found, according to Fox News.

"These jihadists decided to engage in physical violence after being active within the virtual dominions of al-Qaida where exposure to the media had an impact on their personal lives and understanding of religious conduct," wrote the study's independent researchers, Nico Prucha and Ali Fisher.

The researchers, who looked at more than 75,000 Tweets, said Twitter is now used to share links to Jihadist content across several digital platforms, including YouTube where videos get thousands of online views. A case study in the report looked at Jabhat al-Nusra, a Syrian opposition group, and its online links to al-Qaida.

The report said al-Qaida groups, many of which have active web forums, post their Twitter handles to direct followers to online content promoting their messages.

Intelligence experts have contended that social media has increasingly been the driver for some would-be Jihadists to cross the threshold to violence.

The full report will be available on the center's website sometime Tuesday.
