The biggest reality show on the planet will take place on another planet, according to
NBC News.
Dutch firm Mars One says it will produce a reality show that will center on a group of people who colonize Mars. The show will put four humans on Earth’s neighboring planet every two years beginning in April 2023.
There will be 20 colonists on the red planet by 2033. Colonists would stay on the planet for the rest of their lives. This solves the problem of how to get the colonists back to Earth.
Bas Lansdorp, a researcher from the Netherlands with a master's in science from Delft University of Technology, will finance the out-of-this-world expedition.
Mars One also has the backing of Nobel prize-winning physicist Gerard 't Hooft. Hooft says in Mars One’s video "My first impression was that this is an extraordinary project by people with vision, imagination. But my first reaction was I think like anyone who would be confronted by such an idea: This will never work."
Landsorp says that "creating the biggest media event ever" will finance the venture. "Big Brother" co-creator Paul Romer is on board, according to the U.K. Daily Mail.
In the wake of SpaceX’s first successful commercial mission to the International Space Station last month, Andario Strange of PC Magazine says that, while there's no assurance the mission will become reality, it will inspire others to enter the brave new world of commercial space endeavors.
