Two Cannon Raised from Blackbeard's Ship

Friday, 21 June 2013 10:56 AM EDT

Blackbeard's ship has surrendered more of its historical treasures.

The Daily News of Jacksonville reports that two cannon were raised from the wreck of the Queen Anne's Revenge off the North Carolina coast on Thursday.

A dive expedition at the site this month had hoped to bring up eight cannon. But efforts were hampered by bad weather until Thursday.

There's a $450,000 effort underway to remove all the artifacts from the ship by the end of next year. An extended dive expedition is planned this fall.

Blackbeard captured a French slave ship and renamed it Queen Anne's Revenge in 1717. Volunteers with the Royal Navy killed Blackbeard in Ocracoke Inlet the following year, five months after the ship sank.
