Staples Supplies; Postal Union Objects

Recently, Staples started offering some simple postal supply services, which are convenient and cost efficient for their customers. People have the right to buy — or not. Sounds pretty simple in a capitalist country, right?

Problem is that The American Postal Workers Union objects — and they are protesting against the opening of postal counters in Staples stores that are staffed with nonunion store employees. This, of course, despite the fact that the United States Postal Service is losing money hand over fist and service is regularly getting worse. Staples simply wants to provide better service, and that is all that should matter.

While this very vocal, politically connected labor union is well moneyed, and well connected, all that should matter is what is best for the consumer. And that answer is of course obvious — private enterprise is better than government-backed unions.

Staples has not — and must not — buckle to this pressure. They mustn’t disappoint their customers, and must side with the customer. Of course, consumers can choose to shop wherever they want — but can anyone doubt that a privately owned business will do better work than a government-backed union?

When you are in a fight and you are right, businesses do not appease and do not back down. Staples is right and The American Postal Workers Union is wrong.
