We the people — individually and collectively — are better than Donald Trump. Lying, whining, pettiness and self-pity are not qualities aspired to by most Americans and seeing them regularly displayed by our president is totally unacceptable.

Every day I see people who have experienced wars, cancer, Alzheimer’s and the loss of loved ones, yet none of them behave like Donald Trump. My father’s hip was destroyed in World War II, and (until a hip replacement at age 60) he lived most of his adult life in constant pain with limited ability to walk, yet I never heard him complain.

I admired my grandparents, Russian Jews who immigrated here in the early 1900’s with nothing and made a place for themselves and their families through hard work and a love for the freedoms offered by their adoptive country. They were not perfect, but always tried to live good, honest lives devoid of prejudice and hate.

The significant lessons of my youth taught me the importance of education, philanthropy, and extending basic kindness to others. The teachers, coaches, and leaders I respected led by examples of compassion, morality and good humor. Forty years ago, one of my college professors advised me that I should always strive to be a “mensch,” which is a person of honor and integrity.

Donald Trump embodies none of these qualities, and the fact that such an individual occupies the most important job in the world is another misfortune that Americans can and will overcome.

What makes us a great people and a strong, united country is that Americans are at their best while facing the toughest circumstances and rise to the occasion when the situations are most dire. I am inspired every day by people young and old, who overcome unthinkable obstacles or merely deal with life’s vagaries, but always with a certain stoicism and an abundance of good humor.

History will not be kind to Donald Trump. He will leave no legacy, other than a lesson to others of how not to behave, whether it’s at home, in the schoolyard, or on the world’s stage.
