Last week I was bombarded with emails from Madeline Albright, Howard Dean, Kamala Harris, and Joe Smolskis (Chief Financial Officer of the DNC).
Here are some highlights:
“Our democracy hangs in the balance this November, Rob." — Madeline Albright
“You know just how urgent it is for us to protect our democracy this November by taking back Congress.” — Howard Dean
“It is imperative for us to see this moment for what it is, Rob. The future of our country is at stake this November — and the only way to protect it is by supporting Democratic candidates who will defend our democracy.” — Senator Kamala Harris
“I’ve been going over the numbers, and my records show you haven’t donated yet this year. Can you make your first $3 contribution of 2018 before Friday’s deadline?" — Joe Smolskis
The first question that arose from these emails was “How did I get on a first name basis with Madeline Albright and Kamala Harris? My second — and far more important question — was “What idiot is at the helm of the Democratic Party!?"
If I’m a registered Democrat living in New York City and I’ve contributed to the party in the past, chances are I’m not supporting Donald Trump or any of his sycophants, so why are they preaching to the choir?
Forgetting about Trump’s base, there are plenty of dissatisfied Republicans and undecided fence straddlers who could be convinced to vote for a democratic candidate if there was a message. The only unified message the democrats convey is a whiny, angry, dissatisfied hue and cry that Donald Trump is an unhinged monster.
Okay, what are we going to do about it? If the Democrats want to oust Trump from office, they need a unified voice and a national leader who does more than complain and ask for money.
I’m not sure who that person is, but we better find them fast or we’re going to be disappointed in November.
