Irrational Democrats, Unfeeling Republicans Can't Find Middle Ground

We’ve reached an impasse.

The political opinions of liberal Democrats are too often based on passion and emotions rather than logic and rational thinking, while most Republicans seem to be devoid of feelings when it comes to the suffering and needs of others.

One side addresses illegal immigration by separating infants from parents while the other proposes abolishing ICE as a solution. Rather than attempting to reform existing policies and trying to reach a rational compromise, both sides engage in continual grandstanding and endless blustering, ultimately accomplishing nothing.

When I was a college freshman majoring in Politics in 1974, in my first class our professor joked that Monty Hall (then host of the game show "Let’s Make A Deal") was the ultimate politician because political success was measured on compromises and deal making. Although true then, bipartisan politics barely exist today and our self-proclaimed deal making president couldn’t sell water to a thirsty man in the desert.

My city (New York) has a crumbling infrastructure, yet rather than earmark money to repair our failing subways, the Mayor and Governor blame each other while promising new “free” programs despite no apparent funding.

Nationally, our disabled veterans don’t receive proper medical attention from the VA, while television commercials air daily asking for private contributions, yet Republicans want to fund an unneeded Space Force before resolving this serious problem.

All of this sounds wildly wrong to me and perhaps even slightly insane, yet we are witnessing business as usual in American Politics today with a unique combination of stupidity and inertia being the only shared goal of both parties.

Many of my fellow Democrats are blind to the fact that people were so unhappy with Obamacare that they voted for Donald Trump. He had promised to repeal and replace it, yet he’s been incapable of doing either. Rather than discuss reforming the ACA, Democrats seem content with ignoring it entirely, along with every other policy matter.

I am continually flabbergasted that Donald Trump is president and that he continues to govern with such incompetence, yet I am equally dumbfounded that the Democrats are unable to mount an effective response.

Promises of a Blue Wave in November may be greatly exaggerated.
