There are a number of issues with ‘Medicare for All’ that the leftist snake oil salesmen peddling the proposal would prefer voters didn’t know. The first is we’ve had a test program of government-run healthcare for over 100 years and it’s been a failure and an embarrassment.

That program is called the Veterans Administration and the one constant that surrounds VA healthcare is scandal. Veterans are trying to escape the VA’s closed healthcare ecosystem and use private sector doctors and facilities.

Naturally, neither Bernie nor Lie-awatha mention the VA when promoting ‘Medicare for All’ because the associations aren’t positive. Instead, backers of the idea like to describe it as being like Canadian healthcare.

And while everyone in Canada is indeed covered by a national health insurance program and treatment is “free,” policy coverage alone is useless without treatment. And getting treatment is where Canadians encounter problems.

Health policy analyst Sally Pipes knows a great deal about Canadian healthcare and what she knows isn’t encouraging.

Pipes writes at Fox News that, “Canada's system of socialized medicine is actually a nightmare. It has left hospitals overcrowded, understaffed and unable to treat some patients. Americans would face the same dismal reality if Canadian-style 'Medicare-for-all' takes root here.”

That’s because the ugly secret of socialized medicine is that in theory coverage may be “free” but patients are forced to pay in a manner that can be more expensive in the long run. That payment comes in the form of rationing.

Pipes explains, “coverage doesn't always secure care. According to the Fraser Institute, a Canadian think tank, patients waited a median of nearly 20 weeks to receive specialist treatment after referral by a general practitioner in 2018. That's more than double the wait patients faced 25 years ago.”

What’s more, waiting can be deadly. “Dr. Roland Orfaly of the British Columbia Anesthesiologists' Society testified that over 300 patients in the province died waiting for surgery from 2015 to 2016 because of a shortage of anesthesiologists.” Those 300 deaths didn’t take place Canada-wide. The deaths from rationing were in a single regional health authority and that province alone has five health authorities!

Government-supplied healthcare is fantastically expensive. It’s so expensive government can’t tax the public enough to pay for all the demand for care. The only way the program can be sustained is through rationing. Pipes found, “Shortages of crucial medical personnel and equipment are common throughout Canada. The country has fewer than three doctors for every 1,000 residents. That puts it 26th among 28 countries with universal health coverage schemes. If current trends continue, the country will be short 60,000 full-time nurses in just three years.

“In 2018, Canada had less than 16 CT scanners for every million people. The United States, by comparison, had nearly 45 per million.”

The situation is so bad Canadians who can’t wait for treatment are forced to travel to the U.S. and pay for healthcare out of their own pocket.

‘Medicare for All’ would be a disaster for almost all. The only people who wouldn’t suffer are the people who never suffer from political bad decisions. And those people are Bernie and Lie-awatha who would be bumped to the head of any healthcare waiting line, because after all, they are special!
