Let Americans Roll the Dice

Seventeen years ago an unknown, at the time, writer began a sports blog known as Barstool Sports. Now Dave Portnoy is a multi–millionaire Iinternet entrepreneur who could safely sit out the Great Pandemic Panic Lockdown with no damage to his bank account.

Instead Portnoy got off his barstool and created a web rant that has touched a nerve.

Portnoy has noticed, as have the writers of this column, that the Flu Manchu goalpost for resuming normal life in American has not only been moved, the posts have been taken from the stadium and hidden in an undisclosed, secure location.

This is the usual politicians' bait-and-switch aided by obscure health department officials whose egos have grown to a BMI of 50 now that "doctor’s orders" have the force of law.

Portnoy forcefully blows the whistle on this switcheroo: "When did this become flatten the curve to we have to find a cure or everyone’s going to die? Who says we’re going to find a cure? We haven’t found a cure to cancer for 20 years, so the economy’s just shut down?"

It’s obvious the American public played by the rules, then the politicians changed the rules. "We’re doing what you asked. We’ve done exactly what you said, now you’re changing the rules. Some states are open, some states are closed. It seems along political lines."

That's exactly right.

States with leftist governors who are part of the anti-Trump "Resistance" are still closed indefinitely or reopening very slowly and grudgingly. Their view seems to be if keeping everyone "safe" means beating President Trump in November, then destroying the economy is a small price to pay.

What Portnoy didn’t say is there are two Americas.

One, his, where people want to return to work and the other where passive people are paralyzed by fear of a virus and believe their fears should determine how everyone else lives their lives.

Portnoy, like many, many Americans, is realist who knows the future with the Wuflu is uncertain, "There are no great options, but you can’t just decimate the entire economy. How is that going to work? Staying inside ’til there’s a cure? When did that become the game? Who said we’re getting a cure? That’s not a guarantee. So, we’re just done as humans?"

There are people who are extremely susceptible to the China flu and they should take responsibility for their own health and self-quarantine while the rest of us start living again.

We agree with Portnoy’s conclusion, "We’re Americans you have to take risks. …We have no chance if you don’t let people go outside. Let me roll the dice …or at least give me the choice. That’s all we want."
