It’s becoming increasingly obvious the Emmy Awards are an insider-only show that is designed to please the participants first and to heck with the audience at home.
How else can one explain the stubborn refusal of award show producers and presenters to tone down the almost constant disparagement of the Americans living in what they dismissively refer to as “fly-over country”?
The evidence is clear. Last year’s audience ratings were charitably described as dismal. Rather than tone down the anti-mainstream America tone, the producers doubled-down. The result was the audience for the 2018 edition set an all-time record for low ratings, a full ten percent under last year’s collapse.
As Fox News’ Brian Flood wrote, “Hollywood may have laughed... but Tinseltown's latest middle finger to Middle America fell flat in flyover country, and may have contributed to the telecast's all-time low viewership.”
The insults began with the opening monologue when co-host Michael Che announced his mother would not be watching the show, “She says she doesn’t like watching white award shows because you guys don’t thank Jesus enough. That’s true. The only white people that thank Jesus are Republicans and ex-crackheads.”
Che and the rest of the hard cultural left participants were so proud of that insult that it became a running ‘gag’ throughout the rest of the show.
They evidently missed the fact is caused white Christians, moderates, and conservatives to do some running of their own, to other viewing options.
Fox Nation host Britt McHenry remarked that it’s amazing how tone-deaf Hollywood continues to be. “Most Republicans have stopped watching awards shows or know that even if they can stomach it, the White House and their core values will be attacked,” McHenry explained. “I kept thinking last night, thank goodness for a few actors like Chris Pratt, who buck the trend and show a healthy respect and love for Christianity in acceptance speeches. Reverence for God is something to cherish and uphold, not ridicule.”
The choice for deplorables and normals, when presented with this unrelenting assault on their values and beliefs, is to vote with their remote and choose something else to watch. Or better yet, read a book.
Even Hollywood apologists are recognizing just how extreme the award show broadcasts have become. Mediaite columnist Joseph Wulfsohn acknowledged, “[Award shows] cater to one audience: liberals who despise the current presidency. This year's Emmys in particular was actually one of the least Trump-centric award shows since he took office, but the appeal to reach a wider audience is no longer there. The politics are baked into the DNA. And now, Middle America knows to simply change the channel.”
