The Only Element That's Progressive in Homeless Policy Is the Illness

The current "homeless crisis" is another problem created by impractical, dreamy leftist policies. It’s a problem that will only get worse until politicians dump policies that created the crisis in the first place.

If you live in a blue state or blue city, our advice is don’t hold your breath.

Dr. Drew Pinsky explained the problem during a Fox interview. For those readers who think Pinsky’s name is familiar, but you can’t quite remember why, we’ll let Wikipedia refresh your memory. "David Drew Pinsky, commonly known as Dr. Drew, is an American celebrity doctor who is an internist, addiction medicine specialist, and media personality. He hosted the nationally syndicated radio talk show ‘Loveline’ from the show's inception in 1984 until its end in 2016."

Pinsky contends ideology, that has assumed the strength of theology, prevents a solution. "The ideology is — this is a housing crisis. Period. End of story. It's income inequality.[But] it's not. It is a mental health crisis. If you don't wake up from that theological fog, more people are going to die. Three people die on the streets every day in Los Angeles county. Three every day, and people who get in the way of treating those people are murderers. They are, and I'm sick of it."

That contradicts what the opposition media and the left would have us believe.

Homeless people in their eyes are all school teachers forced out of their homes by rising property values. Or they're victims of medical bills that drove them out of house and home. And they are veterans!

The fact that school teachers aren’t going to be pooping on the sidewalk and using syringes somehow escapes leftist reporters.

Drew contends most of the homeless are either mentally ill or addicts and some are both. They are on the street because leftists in 1960 destroyed the state mental health hospital system.

Patients were "warehoused" and "community treatment" was the better policy.

The fact that community treatment mostly consisted of giving the mentally ill a bottle of pills they would subsequently refuse to take without supervision escaped those caring dilettantes.

Pinsky explains, "A big majority are drug and alcohol. It's the last chapter of our opioid crisis, playing out in our streets. Lots of mental health issues. We started this back in the 1960s, which was eviscerating the state mental health system.

These homeless don’t need a brand new apartment built for them.

What they need is housing inside a mental health institution where they can get treatment in a clean, safe, and positive environment.

The chance this will happen is slim. First, it would require the left to admit they were wrong in the 1960s. Second, there is too much money going to the compassion complex.

Social workers, government employees, architects, developers, builders, conselors, poop scoopers, non-profits, academics, and even tent manufacturers are all profiting from the current status quo.

The only people it hurts are the law-abiding citizens being assaulted, robbed, and otherwise inconvenienced by the homeless and the homeless themselves.
