When we were kids there was a version of mild commercial stereotyping surrounding children’s toys. If a toy had the label ‘Made in Japan’ it was expected to be cheap and easily broken. There was evidence for this. Many toys made in Japan were cheap and easily broken.

When Japanese cars began to be produced in the USA — Honda in 1982 — it quickly became evident that Japanese quality exceeded that of Detroit and ‘Made in Japan’ became a sign of attention to detail and excellence in fit and finish.

We have somewhat the same situation today among the American left, although it isn’t based on factual evidence, there is no historical perspective, and, worst of all, there is no path to redemption, regardless of the evidence.

The American left is knee-jerk anti-American and the left’s distaste extends from the beginning of the nation to the present day.

The latest example is Nike’s recent decision to use the ‘Betsy Ross’ flag on a sneaker produced to honor the United States on the 4th of July. The shoe was moving smartly along toward release when Nike CEO Colin Kaepernick found out about it.

Having a lot of time on his hands after the implosion of his football career, Kaepernick has expanded his cultural criticism from music to flags. He claimed the flag the Continentals fought under during the Revolution was part of the slavery era and a symbol used by white supremacists.

That pegged the ‘Woke Meter’ at Nike and production of the shoe was cancelled and all shipments recalled.

Various members of the Hate Chorus chimed in to support the easily-offended Kaepernick. Julian Castro — one of the cast of thousands running for the Democrat nomination — was among them. Fox News reports Castro sniffed and said, "he was 'glad to see' Nike removed the shoes over the 'painful' symbol that he compared to the Confederate flag."

On MSLSD Michael Eric Dyson leaped off the deep end, “Why don't we wear a swastika for July 4th? Because, I don't know, it makes a difference. The cross burning on somebody's lawn. Why don't we just have a Nike celebration of the cross — those symbols are symbols of hate. So, we can take PC culture back.”

There are a number of problems with this celebration of ignorance and hate.

First the United States didn’t exist when the flag was designed. Any slavery that existed, existed under British rule. Second, the flag’s designer, Betsy Ross, was a committed abolitionist who abhorred slavery and wanted to see it abolished.

Third, as a quick-witted Tim Murtaugh pointed out, a much, much larger version of the Betsy Ross flag was flown during Barack Obama’s second inauguration without any complaint. And finally, the Anti-Defamation League, which keeps track of these things, told AP, “the flag isn’t in the organization’s hate symbol database and while extremist groups have occasionally used the flag, it’s most commonly used by people for patriotic purposes.”

As far as the left is concerned “patriotic purposes” is just as bad as the flag being used by the Klan.

It’s enough to make one wonder. If the USA is such a hellhole and symbols of hate and injustice are forced on innocent Social Justice Warriors every day, the question of why do they stay is almost unavoidable.

There’s another contrast that’s also unavoidable. Betsy Ross risked her life when she stood for America, while Kaepernick makes a big deal out of taking a knee for the country that provided all his opportunity.
