Calamity Jane Politics: The Left's Hyping 'Crises' to End the Filibuster and the Republic

Calamity Jane Politics: The Left's Hyping 'Crises' to End the Filibuster and the Republic

The left uses claims of "crisis"―AKA Calamity Jane Politics―as a favored tactic. POLITICO recently noted:

"Climate change? Definitely a crisis, according to the president. Covid-19? Ditto. Among the other crises we’re up against, according to Biden or administration officials, are an ‘economic crisis,’ a ‘growing housing crisis,’ an ‘ongoing public health crisis of gun violence,’ a ‘caregiving crisis,’ a ‘global refugee crisis’ and, a bit farther afield, a ‘deteriorating humanitarian crisis’ in Ethiopia."

Meanwhile, the Democratic Party’s lunatic fringe is now revving up an insidious attempt to bust the filibuster and, thereby, end the American republic. The left is unlikely to succeed, at least short term.

Yet "know thine enemy" is wise political counsel, so let’s take a peek at the left's latest tactic.

Calamity Jane was a frontierswoman and daredevil.

She heroically rescued her post commander, wounded in a skirmish with Native Americans.

Her commander bestowed the nickname, which stuck.

Calamity Jane captured the public imagination. She still resides there. Captain Egan, who she rescued, is all but forgotten.

The left grasps the political power of drama.

So, let’s now learn from our enemy’s use of Calamity Jane Politics to advance their lunatic fringe agenda.

The left’s current main target is the filibuster. The filibuster has long been the "wall" that stands in the way of the left’s most pernicious schemes.

Hence, the hard left now is howling, "Mr. Biden, tear down this wall!"

Why do I equate the filibuster, a mere procedural rule, with the Republic?

America’s founders detested democracy. They considered democracy to be mob rule, a recipe for disaster.

Mob rule, i.e. democracy, yielded guillotines in the reign of terror. The filibuster, although introduced long after the founding, is in full accord with the founders’ governing philosophy.

Republicanism works imperfectly but impressively as a force for liberty and justice for all. It would be a betrayal of republicanism, a subversion of the American form of government, to allow bare majorities of both chambers to pass reckless statutes.

Now, let’s exhale.

Although in his first press conference he softened his opposition, President Biden has and remains opposed to his lunatic fringe’s effort to bust the filibuster.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has not endorsed repeal. And the lunatic left does not seem to have the votes needed to bust the filibuster.

Democratic Senators from red states must privately welcome the filibuster as a heat shield to keep their left-wing activists from forcing them to commit political suicide.

God bless Sens. Manchin, D-W.V., and Sinema, D-Ariz.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has read the Democrats the riot act. He is credibly threatening the use of scorched earth tactics to grind the Senate to a complete halt if the filibuster is repealed. Excellent in terrorem tactic, Leader McConnell! So … this political skirmish looks more like political grand opera than an existential threat.

Still, it’s the left’s metaphysical version of the January 6th physical assault on the Capitol. Columnist goes >grrrr<!

Let us admit that it was a Republican who arguably started the trend toward the promiscuous use of political mass hysteria.

In 2016, writing at Forbes.com, I revealed how Newt Gingrich let this crazed genie out of its bottle. Newt, a provocateur more than a conservative, was the right’s own Saul Alinsky (minus Alinsky’s implacable hatred of Big Government … and wicked sense of humor).

Gingrich, at the peak of his power in 1995, told Gail Sheehy, writing for Vanity Fair: "I think you can write a psychological profile of me that says, 'I found a way to immerse my insecurities in a cause large enough to justify whatever I wanted it to. … [Sheehy:] Ten years ago he was arguably the most disliked member of Congress. Today he is holding forth from the veranda of the office of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, looking down on the Capitol Mall as if it were the great lawn of his own vast estate.' Props to Gingrich for some unvarnished truth: 'a cause large enough to justify whatever I wanted it to' is a great descriptor of the loopy politics that currently besets America. … A compelling Narrative of a threat of catastrophic proportions tends to justify almost any political means, however dubious or even shady, to Save The World. Grandiose drama is a political strategy."

The hard left is conjuring up an impressive Parade of Horribles to justify busting the filibuster.

Read their litany of purported "crises" that the filibuster prevents the Democrats’ lunatic fringe from eradicating, bearing in mind the shrewd counsel of H.L Mencken: "the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary."
