Zsa Zsa Gabor Serious after L.A. Car Crash

Thursday, 28 November 2002 12:00 AM

Gabor was taken by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in West Los Angeles after the car she was riding in went off the street and struck a light pole Wednesday afternoon near the intersection of Sunset and Sweetzer in West Hollywood.

"It may have just been bad driving," said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Bruce Thomas, who told United Press International the investigation was still under way but drugs and alcohol did not appear to have been involved.

Thomas did not know the identity of the driver at the time of the accident, who he referred to as "an unknown male."

"The car was westbound when it left the roadway and hit a light pole along the curb," Thomas said. "Apparently, Ms. Gabor was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered injuries to her upper torso."

A spokeswoman at Cedars declined to provide any information other than the fact that she was listed in "serious condition."

Known to millions simply as "Zsa Zsa," Gabor and her sister, Eva, a star of the television comedy series "Green Acres," were well known for their striking bombshell looks, platinum hair, and sophisticated accents of their native Hungary.

She has been married eight times and showed a preference for wealthy men, including hotel magnate Conrad Hilton.

Gabor was crowned Miss Hungary in 1936 and, after moving to the United States shortly before World War II, acted in films such as "Touch of Evil," "The Girl in the Kremlin," and the 1952 original version of "Moulin Rouge."

Gabor, ever the good sport, also made occasional appearances in sketches on CBS' "Late Night With David Letterman" including one in which she and Letterman playfully tooled around Beverly Hills in a convertible, visiting fast-food drive-through lines while her husband waited patiently on the front porch of their home in the tony "flats" section of the city.

She also served as fodder for late-night show monologues when in 1989 she slapped a Beverly Hills police officer during a traffic stop and was given three days in jail and ordered to perform 120 hours of community service at a women's shelter.
