WTC Recovery Ends, Where's Next Site?

I watched as a stretcher with a folded flag was taken from the site by an honor guard. That stretcher was then taken into a waiting ambulance. I watched as the helicopter flyover took place, again honoring the victims of the worst terrorist attack ever on our soil.

I say the worst terrorist attack ever on our soil because there have been several.

They include the first attack on the WTC; a shooting on the Empire State Building's observation deck; the shooting of a van carrying Jewish students across the Brooklyn Bridge; the assassination of Rabbi Meir Kahane; and the shooting of Sen. Robert Kennedy, killed by Sirhan Sirhan, who said he was against America supplying fighter jets to Israel.

And, of course, there is evidence that the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City also involved Islamic terrorists.

As I watched, I couldn't help but wonder if all this will take place again at a new site in the not-too-distant future. After all, the leaders of our country have spent much of the past two weeks telling us that the next attack is inevitable.

But they didn't stop there. The next attack, they say, could be bigger than Sept. 11. It could in fact be nuclear, chemical or biological in nature. Don't forget the homicide bombers. We're told that they are coming also.

If you have been listening to the people who are charged with protecting this country – our president, vice president, secretary of defense, national security adviser, FBI director, and even the mayor of New York City – you know by now that it's only a matter of time and there is really nothing that we can do about it. We are just sitting ducks waiting on the pond for the next group of hunters to pick us off. The only questions are when, where and how.

Well, I have a few questions of my own for our leaders.

How dare you roll over and give up? How dare you tell the American people that we are defenseless against the terrorist scum who have already caused such great devastation throughout our land? How dare you send these messages out to the rest of the world? How dare you expect us, as Americans, to just sit back and accept the fact that our way of life is over? How dare you expect me to accept the fact that my child may be nuked or ripped to shreds by nails from a homicide bomber's bag of evil?

How dare you show disregard and disrespect to every single man and woman who has ever put on a uniform and proudly fought to establish and defend this great country, many losing life or limb in the process?

My final question to those top governmental officials who until now have had only warnings for us: Where are the warnings to the terrorists?

Why haven't I heard one of them say, "I want to go on the record and say that if America is hit again, we reserve the right to strike back using the full resources of the military might that helps keep America strong and free. We will strike at any group that might take part in such an attack on us, and we will make strict use of President Bush's doctrine. If we are hit again by a terrorist, we will hold responsible any government or nation that supports terrorism in any way. The president has said that you are either with us or against us. If you are with the terrorists and they hit us, we will hit you hard."

Until someone wakes up and says just that, we will certainly be looking at another Ground Zero in the near future. G-d help us, and may G-d help America.
