W.'s Missed Opportunity

But as the father of teenage twin boys who are a year younger than his twin daughters, I can't help but wonder why he never saw an opportunity to teach them the painful lesson of drinking and driving. It just seems odd that he never believed that by sharing his painful story with them, a great lesson would be taught about the consequences of such a careless, reckless mistake.

None of this speculation makes any difference in the presidential race. George W. Bush has demonstrated his strength of character, his solid fiscal blueprint for our nation's economy, and his vision of a smaller, smarter federal government that Americans crave. He should be the next president of the United States. And if that happens, perhaps he'll have the sleazy, slimy, desperate act of the Gore campaign to thank.

But it seems fair to at least ponder his peculiar decision to keep his DUI arrest from his 18-year-old children. As parents, my wife and I strive to do the best we can for our kids. Painful public lessons like this one can teach us all how to be better moms, dads, sons and daughters. I believe that in our household, such an incident wouldn't be a secret kept from the family.

Should it make voters reconsider supporting Gov. Bush? Of course not. Ronald Reagan, a great and good man and one of our nation's finest presidents, apparently wasn't exactly 'father of the year' material. Yet his leadership was an inspiration for generations, proving that great presidents don't neccessarily make great dads.

We can, indeed, glean a lot from the past few wild days of this presidential campaign. I hope that somewhere in America, a father or mother is sitting down with his or her teenager and teaching him or her a true-life tale of how to do the right thing.

The story of George W. Bush having the sheer courage and brute strength to walk away from alcohol 14 years ago is one we can all admire. He just should have shared the entire version with his children.
