Will Smith: Racism Inherent in New Movie

Monday, 14 March 2005 12:00 AM

According to the British website FemaleFirst.co.uk, the actor said Hollywood is so nervous about showing a black man and white woman becoming intimate on screen that it stopped the co-stars from kissing in Smith's new film, "Hitch."

To avoid controversy, Smith says, he was asked to smooch Latin beauty Eva Mendes instead. The 36-year-old "Men in Black" star said, "How are you not going to consider Cameron Diaz?"

But Hollywood avoids presenting images of a black man kissing a white woman on screen, he says. "That becomes massive news in the U.S. Outside America, it's no big deal. But in the U.S., it's still a racial issue. Ironically, Hollywood is happy to if the film is about racism. But they won't simply do it and ignore it."

Meanwhile, Will has confessed that he and wife Jada Pinkett Smith are getting marriage counseling to keep their relationship on track.

The star says one of their first dates was an appointment with a psychoanalyst, which they set up after being inspired by the self-help book "Women Who Run With Wolves" by Clarissa Pinkola Estes.

He said: "We wanted to start this off right, with someone to tell us what we were doing. Jada read the book and said, 'Oh my God, this is me.'

So I read the book too and we called and set up a meeting with the author to get more in-depth ideas."
