Why the Fall of Dan Rather Is Like the Fall of the Berlin Wall

Wednesday, 22 September 2004 12:00 AM

Today, an Islamic Web site showed a horrifying and brutal beheading of an American construction engineer Eugene Armstrong. While America was subject to endless Abu Ghraib footage of naked men piled upon naked men, the media deliberately ignore the atrocities of the slaughter of innocent school children in Beslan, Russia, and the constant beheadings. Why? Because it does not fit into their political agenda of promoting John Kerry and attacking Bush. They are not journalists. They are ideologues and propagandists who carefully edit their stories not to communicate truth, but to promote their not-so-hidden agenda.

However, the “old media” dominance of news and information is over. Millions of Americans are tuning out and going to the Internet, talk radio and media outlets like Fox News Network for their information.

The big three media organizations like CBS, NBC And ABC are in the exact same position as the “big three” Detroit automobile manufacturers were in a number of years ago when they continued to manufacture “clunkers,” and the Japanese took over the market with better product. The fact is that the Dan Rather, CBS and the “old media” are completely out of touch with their marketplace. It is no accident that CBS’s “Bush bashing” programming has caused CBS Evening News to plummet in the ratings in major markets across the nation or that the Fox News Network beat out CBS, NBC and ABC in their coverage of the Republican convention. Americans are no longer interested in the left leaning propaganda of the “old media.”

During the last eight years, a revolution has occurred in the consciousness of America. The Internet, talk radio and some of the cable news networks have become the new media. About 20 years ago American consciousness was dominated by just three television networks: CBS, NBC, and ABC. The majority of the people writing and producing for these media organizations were influenced by or came from 1960’s counter culture revolution. Sixties ideologies and ideas like feminism, socialism, internationalism, anti-Americanism and extreme environmentalism form the subtext of their version of the news. This is why they love John Kerry and Bill and Hillary Clinton, because they embody 1960’s ideals. But, what the “old media” does not understand is that there has been another revolution after the 1960’s counter culture revolution. America is in the middle of a paradigm shift of a new consciousness. This new consciousness is reflected in the entrepreneurial spirit and intense desire for the free flow of information that “new media” sources like the Internet, talk radio, and some of the new cable networks represent.

The fall of Dan Rather and CBS represents a revolution in the media. It is just as significant as the fall of the Berlin Wall or the advent of the Guttenberg printing press which fostered the Reformation. Dan Rather is an icon for the “old media.” Fifteen years ago he could have done the same story in the same way and gotten away with it. There were no checks and balances back then. But, now people have choices. CBS, ABC and NBC no longer have a monopoly on information. The Berlin Wall has fallen and so has CBS!
