What Matters Most

Compared with monumental changes taking place, here are some far-less critical events that may cloud the observer’s vision:

Enumeration of relative superficialities could run on and on like a bad dream made into a worse movie. Indeed, they are fraught with genuine perils for all, or a few, Americans.

As weighty as many of those issues may actually be and as compelling as all seem on the 24-hour news torrents, they amount to trickles in face of overwhelming sea changes surging to engulf the world.

The expression on everyone’s lips after the Eleventh of September – “nothing will be the same again” – is truer than anyone thought.

Those terrorist attacks on America’s homeland did not trigger the New Worldwide Upheaval. They just served to bring its existence into sharper focus for any who care to see.

Observe about you. Everything within sight and sound may be taken in the proper context of this unprecedented, fundamental, accelerated change. Realignment is a better word.

Science is realigning. Technology is realigning. Medicine is realigning. Education is realigning. Arts are realigning. Religions are realigning. Economies are realigning. Demographics are realigning. Social systems are realigning. Governments are realigning. Global institutions, private and public, are realigning. Even realignments are realigning.

Most compelling of all, fundamental beliefs and value systems are realigning.

On balance, most of those realignments are for the good. This is, accept it or not, actually becoming a better world – and at no previous time in modern history has that statement been possible.

As never before, the United States is inescapably the only nation state with the economic, military, political and moral weight to shape and lead all those realignments.

No American president has had a greater opportunity to change the course of this nation for the better than George W. Bush.

The more you see of this fellow at work, the more you realize he senses this opportunity and the power invested in him to precipitate and direct change for the good.

All this stupendous ferment taking place is also opening countless opportunities for just plain folks to make a difference and help shape wholesome realignments in everyday lives.

It is becoming ever more evident that God most certainly is still alive and well – and on the job.
