Verizon Now Offering TV Service

Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:00 AM

Verizon Communications is set to become the first major phone company to offer home TV service – and it will be cheaper than cable TV.

The company is launching the service at first only in Keller, Tex. But by the end of the year Verizon will have laid enough fiber-optic cable to be able to offer TV service to 3 million households in a number of states including California, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania and Virginia, the Wall Street Journal reports.

How soon it will actually provide the service will depend on how quickly Verizon gets approval from local governments.

Verizon's cable-beating rate structure threatens to spark the kind of price war that has brought down phone rates and the cost of high-speed Internet access, according to the Journal.

The average monthly cable bill for standard analog service, about 80 channels, is $39.63, and digital service costs around $15 more.

Verizon hasn't officially announced its rates, but documents show that in Keller, the company will charge $36.90 for about 140 channels and $43.90 for about 185 channels of digital service.

Verizon will be able to offer more channels than most cable companies because its fiber-optic lines, linked directly to homes, have more capacity than the coaxial cable used by cable TV companies.
