Venezuela, Vietnam Plan to Open Embassies

Wednesday, 21 September 2005 12:00 AM

CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela and Vietnam plan to open embassies soon in each other's capitals as their governments aim to deepen ties, Venezuela's Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

The announcement came as newly designated Vietnamese charges d'affaires Nguyen Van Tich visited Caracas to select a location for the embassy.

"There are many possibilities to develop to further deepen the relationship of cooperation and friendship between these two peoples," the diplomat said, according to a statement from Venezuela's foreign ministry.

Officials say the South American oil-producing country is also expected to send a delegation soon to Hanoi to prepare to open a diplomatic mission.

Chavez, who says he is leading Venezuela toward socialism, has sought to deepen ties with many countries in Asia and elsewhere since taking office in 1999.

Venezuela and Vietnam have had diplomatic relations since 1989.
