Vaccine For All Flu Types

Researchers are testing a new vaccine that would protect against all strains of flu, including bird flu, permanently. Current vaccines only protect against specific strains for a limited amount of time, and scientists have to guess which version will be prominent in the upcoming flu season. But flu viruses mutate quickly and by the time the yearly flu epidemic is in full swing, the virus may have mutated enough that the vaccine isn't as effective as hoped, and new vaccines must be developed each flu season.

The British newspaper "Telegraph," reported that the new vaccine, FLU-v, focuses on parts of the virus that do not mutate from year to year. Tests on mice showed that 57 percent of mice given the new vaccine survived a lethal dose of the flu compared to none that were given a control flu vaccine.

FLU-v is also quicker and easier to produce than traditional vaccines which will allow it to be made in large amounts and administered quickly to millions of people in advance of a flu pandemic.

"These are extremely encouraging results," said Dr. Wilson Caparros-Wanderley, the chief scientific officer of PepTcell, the company developing the new vaccine.

All three pandemics that occurred during the 20th century were caused by viruses related to bird flu. The 1918 flu pandemic is believed to have killed as many as 50 million people.
